Questions we hear before a project starts
What do you need to start a product review?
A short product description, your current development stage, and the biggest technical or manufacturing blocker are enough for an initial review. If you already have sketches, CAD files, PCB files, a BOM, supplier quotes, prototypes, test reports, or photos, those can help us understand the situation faster, but they are not required for a first conversation.
Can Mezz sign an NDA before reviewing the project?
Yes. We can sign an NDA before you share detailed product documents, CAD files, schematics, firmware information, supplier contacts, or manufacturing records. For the first call, a high-level description is usually enough; sensitive technical details can wait until the NDA is in place.
Can Mezz join a project that is already in development?
Yes. Mezz can join at different stages, including early concept work, electronics development, EVT, DVT, PVT, supplier recovery, pilot production, and mass production support. Many projects come to us after a prototype exists but the product is not yet reliable, manufacturable, or ready for supplier handoff.
Does Mezz work with international companies?
Yes. We support founders, product teams, and brands outside China while managing product development and manufacturing execution locally in Shenzhen and with Chinese suppliers. This helps international teams keep clearer control over communication, engineering changes, factory follow-up, and production readiness.
Who owns the intellectual property of my product?
Your product idea, brand, and pre-existing intellectual property remain yours. Project-specific ownership of CAD files, PCB designs, firmware, prototypes, drawings, documentation, and production files should be defined clearly in the proposal or service agreement before work begins. Our goal is to make ownership, access, and handover expectations clear so there is no confusion later when the product moves toward manufacturing.
How much does product development cost?
The cost depends on the product complexity, electronics, mechanical design, firmware, connectivity, testing needs, certification requirements, prototype quantity, tooling, and how much work has already been completed. A simple enclosure update is very different from a connected hardware product with custom PCB, firmware, app integration, waterproofing, and production tooling. After reviewing the product stage and technical risks, we can usually break the work into practical phases so you can see what should be done first and what can wait.
How long does it take to develop a new product?
Timelines vary widely depending on scope and risk. Early concept and feasibility work may take a few weeks, while a full hardware product with electronics, firmware, enclosure design, prototyping, testing, DFM, tooling, and pilot production can take several months or longer. The timeline is also affected by component lead times, supplier responsiveness, test results, certification requirements, and the number of design iterations needed before the product is stable.
Can I work directly with a manufacturer instead of Mezz?
Yes, and for some mature products that can work well. The risk is that many factories are optimized for production, not early product definition, engineering tradeoffs, debugging, supplier comparison, or protecting your interests when problems appear. Mezz can act as your product development and manufacturing-side team, helping translate requirements, challenge assumptions, review technical decisions, manage supplier communication, and keep the project moving with clearer accountability.
Do you also support packaging design?
Yes. We can support packaging from a product-development and manufacturing perspective, including packaging structure, materials, protection during shipping, user experience, labeling requirements, supplier coordination, and production readiness. For visual brand design or retail graphics, we can work with your designer or help coordinate the right packaging supplier so the final packaging is practical, manufacturable, and aligned with the product.
Can Mezz support us after mass production starts?
Yes. Support does not have to stop after the first production run. We can help with production follow-up, quality issues, supplier communication, engineering changes, cost reduction, second-source suppliers, inspection planning, failure analysis, packaging improvements, and preparation for future versions. This is especially useful when the first launch reveals issues that need fast technical and supplier-side action.
